Twenty years on, how does the earthquake in Bam (Iran) help us to understand what has just happened in Turkey and Syria? What have we learned about the impact of earthquakes on buildings and cities from this major catastrophe? What is there to worry about? What lessons can we learn for the future?

Through the case study of the Bam earthquake and the lessons of other more recent events, how can we understand what happens before, during and after such disasters?
