Thesis title : Understanding the relevance and impact of cross-disciplinary approach in post-disaster reconstruction projects: the case of ReparH ANR project after the earthquake of Port-au-Prince1

This thesis is based on the context of housing reconstruction after the 12 January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, through interventions around the project Reconstruire parasinistre en Haïti (ReparH).

METHODOLOGY

A comprehensive posture has been chosen as a global approach for the thesis work. This led to adopt a qualitative research methodology in humanities and social sciences. The method of comprehensive interview has been chosen as a method for data collection. To treat and analyse the data, two main methods have been used: the method of a graphic representation in social sciences (mind mapping, concept mapping, social network mapping) and the method of qualitative data analysis supported by the NVivo software (thematic analysis of interviews and documentations).

PROGRESS, RESULTS AND CONTRIBUTION TO RESEARCH

After completing the data collection, the work is currently focused on mapping disciplines and actors (organisations and individuals) to understand and analyse their interactions. The first results of the analysis show that the involvement of complementary academic and professional disciplines, character skills and knowledge from different natures (academic, sociocultural) is an important factor for developing relevant responses to post-disaster reconstruction. These findings contribute to a better reflection and intervention of organizations that are involved in post-disaster reconstruction.

CV PRESENTATION

In 2014, after completing her engineering degree at Ecole Supérieure Polytechnique d’Antananarivo (ESPA), Mampionona RAKOTONIRINA began her professional career as a Consultant and then as a Junior technical officer within the German technical cooperation implementation agency GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) in Madagascar. For nearly two and a half years, she was responsible for the topic of Climate Change Adaptation for the GIZ natural resource management program in Madagascar. Following her selection at Université Paris-Saclay International Master’s Scholarship Programme in 2016, she began her Master's degree at AgroParisTech and the Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle (MNHN). She worked on the subject of the Adaptation to climate change for businesses in the French territory with the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) as her Master thesis. Following her first professional experiences as well as the new social perspective and knowledge in the field of agronomy, Mampionona RAKOTONIRINA returned to Madagascar in 2017 to hold the position of Technical Advisor in Agrometeorology within the GIZ project in the field of agricultural value chain development. Since November 2018, she began her PhD in the AE&CC – CRAterre lab of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Grenoble (ENSAG) on the subject of interdisciplinarity in post-disaster reconstruction projects under the supervision of Thierry JOFFROY (AE&CC – CRAterre) and Laurent DAUDEVILLE (3SR), within the framework of the CDP Risk of Université Grenoble Alpes.
